For characters (people, animals, monsters etc.) Poser is absolutely an amazing software program allowing to to control, shape, texture and ANIMATE your character. You should check it out!
And if you are looking for characters, clothing, props to use in Poser one of the best sites I have found is DAZ. Truly awesome!
